A Sunday getaway to the “Bird Show” at Loch Lomond Harbor - San Francisco Chronicle

What you see: The “Bird Show” at Loch Lomond Harbor is a performance like no other, where you get a chance to watch egrets, herons and gulls feed each morning at a bait shop out at Dock A, sometimes even fed by hand. A chance to buy fresh Dungeness crab, go sturgeon fishing or take in bay views on a levee walk can complete the visit.

Location: At Dock A at Loch Lomond Harbor in San Rafael

The Bird Show: The latest crowd has names like Emma the Egret, Henry the Heron and Pee Wee the Snowy Egret, and over the years the stars of the show have been joined by dozens of other migratory shorebirds. The birds are fed each morning, usually between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., including an annual ritual on Christmas morning, when Keith Fraser and Patrick Clifton open the live bait tanks.

Feathered friends: Over the years there has been Ahab the one-legged Heermann’s gull, Sylvester the night heron, Wee Willie the snowy egret, Nasty the blue heron, Big Ernie the giant egret and many others. The birds often come and go, and what arrives each morning is a surprise.

Pals: “After they fill up, Emma and Pee Wee will even sit on the same rock together,” Fraser said.

Bandits: Some anglers have bought live bait, such as grass shrimp or ghost shrimp, for their fishing trips, and then found their bait is gone. According to Fraser, “The birds will lurk on the dock, hoping somebody leaves out an open bucket.”

A personal note: “These birds are among my best friends,” Fraser said. “If I leave town, I start thinking about them. They're like family. I love these birds. They have more personality than a lot of the people I know.”

Dungeness for sale: High-quality live Dungeness crab is for sale, priced around $20 per crab, and sized and priced Medium, Large and Jumbo.

Sturgeon: Sturgeon fishing is off to an excellent start this winter, best during outgoing tides with big swings from high to low tides. Even with poor tides last Sunday, Capt. Trent Slate of the Bite Me out of Loch Lomond Harbor reported a keeper for all aboard, that is, 1-fish limit for each.

Levee walk: The walk on the Loch Lomond Levee arcs around the outer harbor and provides beautiful views of San Pablo Bay.

Cost: Parking, access free
