Winter is for bird watching and counting: Valley Views - cleveland.com

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio -- The Geauga Park District is offering a variety of birding programs between January and March, from active counting and tagging for scientific census studies to casual observation.

You can start by putting your name on the bird banding hotline list to observe park naturalists tag birds at The West Woods feeders. The banding will be done from 9 to 11 a.m. on dates chosen by the naturalists. You will be called and notified in advance. For extra fun, bring a camera to share your experience. Contact geaugaparkdistrict.org or 440-286-9516. The West Woods is located on Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

Participate in the National Audubon Society’s Great Backyard Bird Count in February from your back yard or stop in from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. the weekend of Feb. 14-16 at The West Woods Nature Center. You can become a citizen scientist and help identify and count birds at the feeders during this worldwide bird count, which is also coordinated by Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

By the way, you can participate indoors and stay warm by observing and counting the birds through the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the numerous bird feeders in the park.

Naturalist Tami Gingrich can teach you to become a better bluebird landlord at 10 am. Saturday, March 14, at The West Woods Nature Center. A separate class on making a bluebird house will be held at noon March 14 at The Rookery park in Chester Township.

A program on the dazzling sky dance and careening descent of the American Woodcock is offered from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, at The Rookery. Registration is required by calling 440-286-9516.

Three van trips are also slated for birders. A winter hawk watch from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, departs from Swine Creek Reservation in Middlefield. A Lake Erie trip from noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, meets at Big Creek park in Chardon. A trip to Mosquito Lake to look for returning waterfowl from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28, will depart from Swine Creek Reservation. Register at geaugaparkdistrict.org or 440-286-9516.

Valentine’s swing concert: The annual benefit for The Chagrin Falls Studio Orchestra will come out swinging at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, with Sammy Davis Jr. impersonator Alfredo Miller and the orchestra’s swing band.

The elegant event includes valet parking, a wine bar and after-party with light refreshments by Chef Andrew of Catering Experience. An optional pre-show party gets under way at 5:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, drinks and priority seating.

It will be held at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, 40 River St. in Chagrin Falls. Tickets are $150 for the show and after-party, or $200 for the pre-party, show and after-show. Contact cvlt.org, 440-247-8955 or visit the box office at 40 River St.

Meet with the herb society: Amber Slane of the Chagrin Valley Herb Society presents a demonstration on floral design at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Bainbridge Library on Snyder Road in Bainbridge Township. Slane, a professional florist, will feature spring flowers. Refreshments will be served. Bring your own beverage mug. Guests are welcome to attend. Register at chagrinvalleyherbsociety.org.

Join the discussion on racism: The Park Synagogue and and Cory United Methodist Church invite adults and teens at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, to a program on racism and anti-semitism at Park Synagogue Main, 3300 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights. Using a facilitator, the program will encourage people of all backgrounds and races to explore their thoughts and feelings about racism and anti-semitism, and work toward constructive changes in themselves and their community. ShareFest returns to Temple Emanu El: The second annual ShareFest will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Sunday, Feb. 2, to benefit about 15 local organizations. The event encourages temple members of all ages to participate in one-day projects that create, collect and nourish the Cleveland community.

Projects include creating cards for soldiers, dog treats for Rescue Village, children’s art, birdhouses and bird feeders, fleece blankets, cookies and brownies for police and fire departments, voter registration and others. Volunteers purchase and organize the supplies and school faculty staff the event.

About 200 to 300 participants are expected. It will be held at Temple Emanu El, 4545 Brainard Road in Orange Village.

Can trees reduce your taxes? Find out by attending a woodland workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at The Patterson Center, Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton. Speakers Luke Walters of the Ohio Department of Natural Resource’s forestry division, Jared Spring of the Geauga County Auditor’s Office and Amy Milam of the Ohio Farm Bureau will explore the Ohio forestry tax law and the current agriculture use value programs available to landowners.
