DULUTH,MN-- It's been a tough first day of life for puppy Fiona.
She is currently receiving care at Animal Allies in Duluth after enduring more in her first 24 hours than most dogs see in a lifetime.
Practice Manager Lindsay Niemi says, "We think Fiona is maybe a day or two old. It seems that she could have been picked up by a raptor type bird."
Picked up by a bird, then dropped Fiona somehow survived the fall and being alone in the cold.
Her eyes have barley started to open, and care-givers can't even tell what breed of dog she might be.
An animal control officer brought her to Animal Allies this morning.
Michelle Carter the Development Officer says, "We are really focusing on her care and that she receives everything that she needs from food to potting and medical treatment."
She's got some nasty cuts, despite that and her small size Fiona's caregivers say she's fiesty.
The shelter says they don't even know where she came from or how far she could have traveled.
Carter says, "The ideal situation would be to reunite her with her mom. If that is a possibility."
The first few days of a puppies life are crucial to the future of their well-being.
This means Fiona will have round the clock care and won't have any visitors for a few weeks.
"With very limited human contact, we just really want to ensure that she has the best fighting chance," says Carter.
Fiona's case is not something they see often.
Lindsay "We don't typically see neo-natal puppies, so we haven't dealt with this for a while."
The shelter is asking anyone on the area with a dog that recently gave birth to count their pups on of the off chance they can find Fiona's mom.
