• Dec. 16: 24th annual Itasca State Park Winter Bird Count, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Itasca State Park, Minn. Meet at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center between 7:30 and 8 a.m. for count assignment; stay a few hours or spend the whole day. Info: (218) 699-7251.

• Dec. 19: Glacial Ridge and Rydell national wildlife refuges Christmas Bird Count. Meet at 8 a.m. at the Rydell NWR Visitor Center, 17788 349th St. SE, Erskine, Minn., to split into teams. Noon potluck planned back at the Visitor Center. Info: Ben Walker, (218) 230-5563.

Park vehicle passes are required for all events at North Dakota and Minnesota state parks. Vehicle passes are $7 daily and $35 annually in both states.

• Dec. 21: Winter Solstice Celebration, 10 a.m., Lake Bemidji State Park, 10 miles north of Bemidji off U.S. Highway 71. Learn about the Winter Solstice and make a nature-inspired solstice lantern. • Dec. 22: Winter Survival Escape Room, 10 a.m., Lake Bemidji State Park, 10 miles north of Bemidji off U.S. Highway 71. Use puzzles, hints and clues to figure out the steps to survive a simulated night of being lost in a national forest. Meet in the Trail Center at least 10 minutes before start time; minimum group size is four and the maximum group size is six. Preregistration required; must be at least 12 years old to participate. • Dec. 29: Winter Walk, Ski or Snowshoe to Rocky Point, 2 p.m., Lake Bemidji State Park, 10 miles north of Bemidji off U.S. Highway 71. Participants will hike, ski or snowshoe as a group down the multi-use Rocky Point trail to the overlook above Lake Bemidji. Info: (218) 308-2300.

• Jan. 1: First Day Hike, 10 a.m., Lake Bemidji State Park. Join the park naturalist for a guided hike or snowshoe -- depending on snow -- along the Bass Creek Trail while learning about the history of snowshoes. • Jan. 1: First Day Hike: A Backcountry Exploration, 1 to 3 p.m., Itasca State Park, Minn. Meet at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center and dress for being outdoors. South entrance is 23 miles north of Park Rapids, Minn., off U.S. Highway 71. Info: (218) 699-7251.

• Jan. 11: Itasca’s Lantern Lit Snowshoe and Ski Event, 5 to 7:30 p.m., Itasca State Park. Start at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center and ski or snowshoe by the light of the moon and kerosene lanterns along the trail. Limited snowshoes available on a first-come, first-served basis. Info: (218) 699-7251.

• Jan. 11: Candlelight Ski and Snowshoe, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Lake Bronson State Park, located 2 miles east of Lake Bronson, Minn., on Kittson County Highway 28. Trails begin at the Visitor Center. Info: (218) 754-2200.
