MLB rumors: Ex-Yankee Greg Bird could see nice Rangers payday - NJ.com

Greg Bird has moved on to the Rangers for the hope of reviving his career.

The cherry on top? His 2020 season could come with quite a payday, too.

The minor-league deal Bird agreed to with Texas on Tuesday included more than an invitation to major-league spring training.

The contract also said his big-league salary would be $1.5 million and that he could earn up to $500,000 in bonuses, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Last season, Bird made $1.2 million in his first year of salary arbitration.

The former Yankees top prospect will compete with Ronald Guzman and others for the starting job in Texas. He could also wind up in a platoon. Last season, Guzman hit just .219 with 10 homers and 36 RBI in 256 at-bats and 81 games at first base. But Guzman is also a lefty batter who’s considered a better fielder than Bird.

The Yankees designated Bird for assignment this offseason with plans for Luke Voit to start at first base. Mike Ford, a New Jersey native and lefty swinger, could back Voit up. Miguel Andujar, a third baseman, has also started practicing at first base.

Bird made his big league debut with the Yankees in 2015, then missed all of 2016 following surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, He was limited to a .190 average in 48 games in 2017 after fouling a ball off his right ankle and a .199 average in 82 games the following year following ankle surgery.
