There’s a good chance Geno Auriemma will be feeling a bit nostalgic when his UConn Huskies host the U.S. national team later this month.
On Wednesday, USA Basketball announced its roster for the Jan. 27 exhibition at the XL Center in Hartford and it includes four of the most distinguished players to ever step on the court for the 11-time national champions.
Sue Bird, Tina Charles, Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi are expected to play in the contest, which will tip off at 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN2. For Stewart, a former three-time Associated Press national player of the year, it will mark her return to game action after she tore her Achilles’ tendon playing overseas in April. Stewart missed the entire 2019 WNBA season following an MVP campaign.
Former Husky Jennifer Rizzotti, who is also currently the coach at George Washington, will be on the coaching staff for the U.S. Dan Hughes and Cheryl Reeve will serve as co-coaches in Dawn Staley’s absence.
Additionally, UConn announced earlier Wednesday that it’ll honor its 2009 and 2010 national championship teams before beforehand. Thirteen players are confirmed to attend, including Tiffany Hayes, Renee Montgomery and Maya Moore, along with former assistants Jamelle Elliott and Marisa Moseley.
The rest of the national team’s roster includes Layshia Clarendon, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Sylvia Fowles, Chelsea Gray, Kayla McBride, Nneka Ogwumike, Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson.
The U.S. is also scheduled to play at Louisville on Feb. 2 before traveling to Serbia for the 2020 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament from Feb. 6-9. The Americans have already earned an Olympic bid.
