Frank DeMartino, an avid birdwatcher, will discuss the amazing feat of bird migration in his presentation Fly Me To The Moon: Bird Migration Myths & Realities at the Santa Barbara Audubon Society, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in Farrand Auditorium in the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, 2559 Puesta del Sol. The event is free to attend; doors open at 7 p.m.

Humanity has been fascinated by the pattern of appearing and disappearing birds for millennia. Understanding migration is a key step to realizing the challenges and threats birds deal with on a regular basis.

DeMartino will explore some of the myths that have surrounded migration through the ages and some that persist. The program will highlight some of the obstacles migrating birds face and the incredible ways they have evolved to deal with them.

Finally, the program will look at current conservation issues that pertain to migration, and current conservation efforts, such as Cornell's Seven Simple Actions to Bring Birds Back.

DeMartino's passion for birds has led him to serve on the board for both Ventura Audubon Society and Conejo Valley Audubon Society (CVAS). He currently serves as president for CVAS and he opened a Wild Birds Unlimited store in Ventura in 2017.

The Santa Barbara Audubon Society, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
