Visitors flock to the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival to learn about birds and tour habitats - KSBY San Luis Obispo News

Hundreds of bird species call the Central Coast home and local birders got their binoculars ready to catch a glimpse of them.

Bird enthusiasts flocked to the Morro Coast Audubon Society's annual Winter Bird Festival held at the Morro Bay Art Gallery Sunday.

Organizers say the event is a way to appreciate birds and wildlife and to be aware of local environmental issues.

Pacific Wildlife Care, the only licensed rehabilitation center for injured animals in San Luis Obispo County, brought a large, rescued bird to the reception for people to see.

Visitors could also tour bird habitats including deep water pelagic, oak woodland and riparian, wetland and estuary, and the grassland habitat of the Carrizo Plain.

One of the art exhibits displayed fine art paintings and photography of Morro Bay's different indigenous species of birds.

According to the event site , almost 600 people attended the 23rd annual event in 2019.

The event is sponsored by the Morro Coast Audubon Society in collaboration with California State Parks, the Central Coast State Parks Association, and the City of Morro Bay.
